There are roughly 15 to 20 holidays in Japan. ( The reason why I used ‘roughly’ is sometimes holidays are on weekend, Saturday or Sunday.) And it’s Marine Day in Japan today, so let’s look at the meaning and history of it together!
When is Marine Day?
Since 2003, Marine Day has been on the third Monday of July. Before 2003, it was on July 20. In 2001, Act to amend a part of the law on public holidays was enacted, and it took effect in 2003.
What does Marine Day mean?
Usually, many people in Japan go to the seas on Marine Day. Of course, there are some people who go to the seas and enjoy swimming, surfing, and so on before Marine Day, but people tend to believe it’s the first day to enjoy the ocean of the summer.
History of Marine Day in Japan
