Do you want to get married with your same sex partner? Or do you have interests to the right of LGBTQs? Canada is a great country where the same sex marriage is legally approved. Let’s take a glance at Canada’s policy of the rights of homosexuals.
History
- Same sexual activities between adults were illegal and those people are punished by 1969.
- In 1977, Quebec amended the provincial charter of human rights to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.
- In 1996, the Canadian Human Rights Act was amended to prohibit discrimination against sexual orientation.
- In 2000, the Parliament entitled same- sex couple the same social and tax benefits as heterosexuals.
- In 2005, Canadian government allowed same-sex couples to be married anywhere in Canada.
Statistics
Here, I’ll introduce LGBTQs in Canada in terms of numbers based on the 2016 Census.
- In 2016, there were 72,880 same-sex couples in Canada, which is 0.9% of all couples.
- Among same-sex couples, male couples(51.9%) are more than females(48.1%).
- 24,370 same-sex couples are married out of 72,880, which means about one-third of them, and 48,510 couples were living common law.
- 12.0% of all same-sex couples had children living with them.
